As 2025 draws to a close, it’s clear the year will be remembered for major political shifts, profound cultural moments, and blockbuster entertainment that captivated audiences around the globe. From Washington to Rome and from Cannes to the cinema box office, 2025 offered a mix of surprise, sorrow, and spectacle.
🗳 Political Headlines: The Return of Donald Trump
One of the biggest global stories of 2025 was the return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency. Taking office for a second term in January, Trump’s leadership quickly made headlines worldwide as he pursued pro-American economic policies, new immigration measures, and an aggressive trade stance. His return also shaped international diplomacy, including summits with Russian President Vladimir Putin that sought—but ultimately struggled—to find progress on the war in Ukraine.
In financial markets, the Trump administration’s policies contributed to sharp economic volatility, including a notable stock market downturn in early April tied to trade tensions and tariff actions.
✝️ Religion and Reflection: The Death of Pope Francis and a New Papacy
The global religious community mourned deeply in 2025 with the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at age 88. His passing prompted international mourning and one of the largest gatherings of global leaders and dignitaries at his funeral, broadcast around the world.
Following this, the 2025 papal conclave convened in May, electing Pope Leo XIV (Robert Francis Prevost) as the 267th pope, ushering in a new chapter for the Roman Catholic Church.
