Trade Occupations: Carpenters – Crafting with Purpose

Carpentry is one of the oldest and most versatile trades, blending craftsmanship, design, and hands-on work. Carpenters build, install, and repair structures made of wood and other materials—everything from framing houses and building decks to crafting custom cabinets and restoring historic buildings. There are several types of carpentry specialties, including residential, commercial, finish carpentry, and cabinetmaking, each with its own unique set of skills and tools.

Aspiring carpenters usually start by getting a high school diploma or GED, followed by enrolling in a vocational program or entering an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships typically last three to four years and provide both on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Carpentry requires strong math skills, physical strength, the ability to read blueprints, and a good understanding of materials and tools. Safety training is also essential, as carpenters often work with saws, ladders, and scaffolding.

Salaries for carpenters vary based on experience, location, and specialization. Entry-level carpenters may earn around $40,000, while those with years of experience and specialized skills can earn $70,000 or more. Carpenters can work for construction companies, remodeling firms, or even start their own businesses. For those who take pride in building things that last and enjoy seeing the tangible results of their work, carpentry is a fulfilling and creative career path.
