In Loving Memory of Myra Rattan
Myra Joyce (Bishop) Rattan, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at The Commons Assisted Living in South Bend, Indiana. Myra was born on June 30, 1932, to Edith Esther (McRae) and John Spurgeon Bishop in Belmont, Mississippi, delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Kenneth F. McRae. Dr. McRae, born on March 28, 1869 in Tishomingo, Co., was the youngest son of John and Amanda Smith McRae, who were pioneer settlers in Miss. Dr. McRae graduated from the School of Medicine in Memphis, Tenn. in 1902 and practiced medicine in Tishomingo Country for more than 50 years.
Myra was known for her strong faith, leadership, good humor, and intelligence. Top of her class at Mississippi State College for Women (MSCW), Myra earned a bachelor’s degree in library science in 1954. During her college years, she was President of the Baptist Student Union, officer in the Glee Club, member of the MSCW Hall of Fame and The President’s Council. The Booneville, MS, Mayor declared the 20-year-old “a red-haired beauty!” when she was crowned Booneville’s Miss Hospitality in 1952.
Myra met the love of her life, Doug Rattan, during her Senior year at MSCW, when Doug’s buddy arranged a blind date, remarking that, “You’ll like this girl! She doesn’t smoke or drink!” The tall, crew-cut cowboy from Texas, fresh out of the Navy, and the sweet Southern Belle discovered that they were kindred spirits, excited to blaze a new trail together. Myra and Doug were married on Nov. 23, 1955, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Lubbock, and shared 44 years of marriage, until Doug’s death on February 12, 2000.
Myra’s first job out of college in June 1954 was a dream come true: driving a bookmobile for the Louisiana State Library to bring books to eager readers in Lake Providence. At the end of her year’s contract, sporting a beautiful diamond engagement ring, Myra moved to Lubbock, Texas, to be near Doug. While he was finishing his degree in Agricultural Engineering at Texas Tech, she excelled as an Adult Circulation Librarian in the Lubbock Public Library, followed by assisting young college students in the reference library on the Texas Tech campus.
After raising their 4 young children in Texas, the family moved to Lathrop, Missouri, in 1975 where they built their own 4-bedroom house from the foundation up! Upon returning to Texas in 2000 to be closer to family in Austin, Myra thoroughly enjoyed active membership in Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, including the Emmaus Community, United Methodist Women, the Flower Committee and her Sunday School class. Sharing her beautiful soprano voice with others, in concert with fellow enthusiasts in the Sweet Adelines, brought her great joy.
An incredibly creative cook, Myra filled numerous binders with recipe clippings, often incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables from their ¼ acre garden. Her baking prowess was legendary, especially her buttermilk biscuits, cornbread, cookies, blueberry muffins and red velvet cake. She sewed most of her young daughters’ clothes, designed creative Halloween costumes and handmade gifts, and decorated our home with handmade pillows, curtains and elaborate crewel embroidery designs.
Myra is survived by her daughters, Catherine (Charles) Bailey of Longmont, CO; Lynn (Danny) Romero of Longmont, CO; her sons, Scott (Laura) Rattan of Round Rock, TX, and Bill (Carlos Mock) Rattan of Chicago, IL; her grandchildren, Madelyn and Jared Romero of Longmont, CO; and Jacob, Bianca, and Nick Rattan of Round Rock, TX; and her favorite cousin, Gloria Dixon Willams of Corinth, MS.
To honor Myra’s memory, our family invites you to spend some time in nature, hug your loved ones, or lose yourself in a good mystery novel. Better yet, bake a batch of her recently revealed “Secret Recipe” for Pecan Sugar Cookies!
