The Fantastic Four: First Steps A Stellar Launch for Marvel’s First Family

Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps (released July 25, 2025) is a triumphant reboot that finally does justice to the beloved First Family. Directed by Matt Shakman (of WandaVision fame), the film transports us to retro-futuristic Earth 828, blending sci-fi thrills with a grounded emotional core.

At its heart, this is the story of Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Ben Grimm (Ebon MossBachrach), and Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) a team of heroes reimagined with depth, chemistry, and authenticity. Pascal delivers a Reed who’s both brilliant and emotionally centered; Kirby’s Sue is fierce, compassionate, and a true leader; Moss Bachrach turns Ben into a tender soul under the rock-like exterior; and Quinn’s Johnny brings the right amount of fire and charm.

Visually, the film’s 1960s aesthetic is gorgeously realized from dreamy production design to bold retro styling. The narrative feels brisk (running about 115 minutes), yet compelling, never bogged down in exposition.

The villains elevate the film: Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer is haunting and tragic, while Ralph Ineson’s Galactus looms large as a cosmic force of nature not just a typical supervillain. Their chemistry with the heroes anchors the moral and emotional stakes, especially the film’s central dilemma involving Sue Storm’s unborn child, Franklin Richards.

Supporting players like Paul Walter Hauser as Mole Man and Natasha Lyonne as teacher Rachel Rozman bring warmth and quirk to the tale; even fleeting cameos from icons like John Malkovich (Red Ghost) add flavor to the broader canvas.

There are a few narrative speed bumps some character arcs could use more breathing room and the ethical dilemma around Franklin’s powers feels underexplored in places. But these are minor gripes in an otherwise bold and emotionally resonant reboot that feels like their film not just another MCU installment.

Overall, Fantastic Four: First Steps marks a confident, fresh start, steeped in retro charm and moral weight. It’s the Fantastic Four movie we’ve been waiting for. This is actually my favorite Marvel film since Avengers: End Game! I give this film four out of four stars! Go check it out!

I have been having some health troubles so sadly I wasn’t able to visit the snack bar this weekend. However, I sure do plan on filling my belly with some nachos and a hotdog next weekend! Make sure you stop by to try them out and don’t forget that the Iuka Drive-In is now open on Monday nights!

I would like to thank the Iuka Drive-In for being such gracious hosts and the Tishomingo County News for allowing me to do what I love! I will see you at the movies!
