Little Martins Farm: A Homesteading Journey Rooted in Family and Sustainability

By: Shelby Smith

In a fast-paced world, Little Martins Farm is a testament to the beauty of slowing down, embracing self-sufficiency, and living with intention. When Megan and Justin Martin made the decision for Megan to stay home full-time, it wasn’t just about stepping away from a traditional job—it was about creating a lifestyle centered around family, sustainability, and a deep connection to nature.

Homeschooling their twins became the foundation of this new way of life, blending hands-on education with the rhythm of farm chores. At the same time, the Martins began their homesteading journey, adding animals to the farm and learning the skills necessary for self-sufficiency. Every day brings new challenges and rewards, as they balance family life, farm work, and education in a way that is both fulfilling and purposeful.

A Growing Homestead

Little Martins Farm is home to rabbits, chickens, and a small herd of goats, both ADGA-registered and non-registered. Each animal plays an essential role in the homestead’s ecosystem. The rabbits provide an opportunity for the children to take on responsibilities while also producing excellent manure for the garden. The chickens supply fresh eggs for the family and local customers.

The goats have become a central part of daily life on the farm. The registered dairy goats provide fresh milk for drinking, cheese-making, and crafting homemade goat milk soaps and lotions, while the non-registered goats assist with brush clearing and add plenty of personality to the farm. This year, the twins are especially excited to begin showing their rabbits and goats, marking a new milestone in their agricultural journey.

A Day on the Farm

Mornings at Little Martins Farm begin early, with the twins preparing breakfast while Megan and Justin head outside to take care of the animals. The day’s routine starts with milking the goats, ensuring a fresh supply of milk for the family’s needs. Next, attention shifts to feeding and tending to the rabbits and chickens before diving into homeschool lessons.

Each day is a mix of traditional education and hands-on experiences. The children might spend part of the morning learning math and science indoors and the afternoon gathering eggs, tending to the garden, or caring for the animals. Evenings are reserved for finishing up farm tasks and settling the animals in for the night. Though the days are busy, they are filled with purpose and a strong connection to the land.

Bringing Farm-Fresh Goods to the Community

One of the most rewarding aspects of Little Martins Farm has been the ability to share its fresh, handmade products with the community. Megan and Justin sell fresh eggs, goat milk, and handcrafted goat milk soaps and lotions directly from their home, offering customers a taste of natural, homegrown quality.

On weekends, the Martins take part in local farmers markets, where they enjoy meeting new people, connecting with other vendors, and expanding their customer base. Looking ahead, they are considering placing a booth or display in local stores to make their products more accessible and continue growing their homestead business.

Encouraging Others to Start Their Homesteading Journey

Since establishing Little Martins Farm a year ago, Megan and Justin have received many inquiries from people seeking advice on how to begin their own homesteading journey. They encourage anyone interested to take the leap, emphasizing that while homesteading is deeply rewarding, it also comes with challenges. There are hard days—animals get sick, losses happen, and the work is never-ending—but each struggle offers valuable lessons.

Homesteading is a continuous learning experience, requiring patience, dedication, and a love for the land. For Megan and Justin Martin, there is no greater joy than waking up each day to a life filled with purpose, sustainability, and connection—one goat, one rabbit, and one fresh egg at a time.

They look forward to growing their farm, expanding their reach, and continuing to inspire others to embrace a simpler, more intentional way of life.
