Borroum’s Drug Store: A Journey Through Time in Corinth
Located in the heart of Corinth, Mississippi, Borroum’s Drug Store is the oldest continuously operating pharmacy in the state, offering visitors a unique experience that blends history, local cuisine, and Southern traditions.
A Family Legacy Since 1865
Founded in 1865 by Dr. Andrew Jackson “Jack” Borroum, a former Confederate Army surgeon, Borroum’s Drug Store has remained a family-run business for generations. After being released from a Northern prisoner-of-war camp at the end of the Civil War, Dr. Borroum settled in Corinth and opened this pharmacy, which has since become a pillar of the local community.
A Step Back in Time
Stepping into Borroum’s Drug Store is like traveling back to a bygone era. The store retains its old-fashioned charm, featuring a 1930s soda fountain, classic wooden booths, and an impressive collection of Civil War artifacts and Native American relics. The walls are lined with historical memorabilia, preserving the town’s rich past.
The Famous Slugburger
One of the must-try specialties at Borroum’s is the slugburger, a regional favorite. Invented in Corinth, this sandwich consists of a mixture of pork or beef and soybean meal, shaped into a patty and deep-fried. Traditionally served with mustard, pickles, and onions, the slugburger is a testament to the resourcefulness of past generations, who stretched their food supplies during difficult times.
A Business That Stands the Test of Time
Today, Borroum’s Drug Store is run by Camille Borroum-Mitchell, the great-granddaughter of the founder and the first woman to graduate in pharmacy from the University of Mississippi. Along with her son Lex and daughter-in-law Debbie, she continues to uphold the family tradition of warm, personalized service.
